DSM-CC (Digital Storage Media Command and Control) is a toolkit that facilitates the transmission and control of MPEG transport streams. DSM-CC includes support for the following features:
- Playing and stopping MPEG video over a network
- Data transmission using MPEG-2,
- Timecodes for MPEG-2 video
- Simple data broadcasting
- Broadcast file systems
To enable continuous data transmission, the DSM-CC standard incorporates two types of carousels, a data carousel and an object carousel. A carousel essentially places data in a circular structure that rotates continuously. The circle can be thought of as passing an exit point, where the data at this point is transmitted. As the circle moves through the exit point, the data will be sent when it reaches this point. The rotation continues, thereby transmitting the data repeatedly in a continuous cycle.
A data carousel has an elementary, flat file structure whereas an object carousel is able to preserve a hierarchical data structure as found in directory based file systems.
This technology is utilised in our TSBroadcaster system, which supports both DSM-CC data and object carousels for application and data delivery over MPEG-2 transport streams.
